A Bug in my Mix

I had a taste for pancakes, but I will need to take a rain check.

Where and When purchased: Whole Foods Market, Palatine IL. October 13, 2007.

Product: Arrowhead Mills, organic kamut pancake and waffle mix.

This is not meant as a negative review for either Whole Foods or Arrowhead Mills. I’m just curious if mine was an isolated incident. The mix was unopened, stored in the pantry, and was purchased six weeks ago. When I opened the bag and looked inside, there was a string of mold with a crawling insect that flew out. Needless to say, my appetite was suppressed.

Any similar experiences?

  1. Doesn’t it make you want to own a farm and grow your own dinner? Well, not really, but our recent ancestors were much healthier because they did indeed grown most of their food. But that’s for a different subject matter… Unfortunately, I have neither the will nor the desire to do that, so I am stuck purchasing plant-packaged garbage. And yes, I did have an experience similar to yours. Mine was with a box of pasta (is it legal to name the brand??) PASTA! My favorite food! I opened my little bit of heaven and find a miriad of little worm-like creatures. I was thouroughly disgusted (on one of my first dinner-at-home dates with my future husband!) but it didn’t deter me from buying it again. I guess it could happen to any company, any brand… I would forgive.

  2. Yes, I guess it could happen to anyone. Growing our own food isn’t anything to dismiss too quickly. Another option would be to shop at Farmers’ Markets, that way you know that everything is fresh plus there is no packaging so you can see the actual food.
